Logan Sargeant Promoted to Williams F1 Team in 2023

Logan Sargeant, an American F2 driver, will race for Williams in 2023. According to team principal Jost Capito, Logan Sargeant will move to Formula 1 if he earns enough super licence points.

Sargeant will make history as the first American to compete in Formula 1 since Alexander Rossi if the rest of his season goes according to plan. He is currently third in the F2 standings with two victories this season.

Sargeant made his Formula One debut at COTA this past weekend, taking Nicholas Latifi’s place in the opening practice session to become the first American driver to compete in an F1 weekend since 2015.

Who is Logan Sargeant?

Logan Hunter Sargeant is an American racing driver born on 31 December 2000. Currently, he is competing in the FIA Formula 2 Championship with Carlin and is a member of the Williams Driver Academy.

Logan’s career started at the karting track, where he participated in competitions since he was eight. He won the Karting Federation Junior title in 2015, becoming the first American to do so since 1978.

Logan raced in the Formula 4 UAE Championship in 2016 and finished second overall with 15 podium finishes. The American joined Carlin Racing the following year to compete in the F4 British Championship, finishing third and earning two victories and ten podiums.

Logan competed in the Formula Renault Eurocup in 2018 with R-ace GP, earning three victories and seven podium finishes to end fourth overall.
Logan returned to Carlin in 2019 for his first season in the FIA Formula 3 Championship, where he collected four points.

In 2020, he joined Prema Racing. He won the Silverstone Feature Race, his maiden FIA F3 victory, and moved into the championship lead.

He earned his second victory by winning the Sprint Race from third on the starting grid at the notoriously difficult Spa-Francorchamps. Logan came in third overall for the year, just four points short of winning the championship.

Logan joined Charouz Racing System in 2021 for his third season in FIA Formula 3. He earned one victory at Russia’s Sochi Autodrom, placing him sixth in the championship standings.

Logan moved up to FIA Formula 2 with HWA Racelab for the remaining three races of the 2021 season before confirming a long-term deal with Carlin for the 2022 season.

What does Logan need to do to get Superlicence?

Sargeant presently has 28 of the 40 required to earn a superlicence. He gained one in Austin last week. However, Logan Sargeant didn’t run the entire 100 kilometres, which cost him an additional Super License point in FP1 at the Mexico City Grand Prix. Sargeant was stopped on 22 laps, one short of the required mileage, by a late red flag. He may gain another one with his last FP1 run in Abu Dhabi.

He also has two bonus points for a clean season from a penalty-free weekend in F2, leaving him with nine needed. That demands finishing in the top six in the championship. However, that might change to the top seven if his performance in Formula 3 last year also nets him two extra points.
