United Stated GP Race Report: Emotional Red Bull wins Constructor's

With his 13th victory of 2022, Max Verstappen extended his spectacular season and tied Michael Schumacher and Sebastian Vettel’s records for wins in a season.

After winning the United States Grand Prix at the Circuit of the Americas in Texas, Verstappen has a chance to break the record with three races left. Sergio Perez’s fourth-place finish helped Red Bull win their first constructor’s title since 2013. The victory comes one day after Dietrich Mateschitz, the team’s founder and the man behind Red Bull, passed away on Saturday. The team’s principal, Christian Horner, praised the importance of the victories for all team members.

Lewis Hamilton, who has yet to take home a victory this season, finished in the second position after the battle for the lead with Verstappen. Charles Leclerc climbed up the grid and placed third on the podium. George Russell knocked Leclerc’s teammate Carlos Sainz into a spin on lap 1.

George Russell finished fifth and took the fastest lap. McLaren’s Lando Norris triumphed in the Alpine vs. McLaren fight, finishing P6 ahead of Fernando Alonso. However, hours after the race, Alonso was hit with a 30-second penalty, placing him in P15.

Alonso and Stroll collided at high speed while racing along the back straight on lap 22 after the Aston Martin driver made a last-second defensive manoeuvre to the left.

The collision led Alonso’s car to point upward before returning to the track while carrying damage that required him to drive carefully back to the pits. Stroll did not finish the race and received two penalty points in addition to a three-place grid demotion for the Mexican Grand Prix.

All of this resulted in Vettel finishing in P7. For the sixth time this year, Kevin Magnussen finished in the points by holding on in the race’s second half. Yuki Tsunoda placed ninth overall. Esteban Ocon earned the last point after finishing in tenth.

Williams’ Alex Albon and Alfa Romeo’s Zhou Guanyu finished in 11th and 12th, respectively.

Following his struggles in qualifying, Pierre Gasly had another eventful race. He was given a time penalty behind the Safety Car that was not fully served in the pits, which caused him to finish 13th.

Mick Schumacher finished in P1, unable to match teammate Kevin Magnussen’s point-scoring performance. Daniel Ricciardo and Nicholas Latifi were the last two cars to cross the line behind Alonso.

Update: Fernando Alonso’s points at the US Grand Prix have been restored after Alpine successfully argued for the right to review the stewards’ decision to dock him points.
